Have you ever wondered what God’s Will is for your life? Have you prayed asking God to please reveal His Will to you? I know I have…MANY times. I have often wondered if I was doing what God wanted me to do.
What is God’s Will for my life? What does He want me to do?
We often believe that we are not in the Will of God if we are not serving as a missionary on a foreign field or pastoring a church. However, that’s not necessarily true. That may be the plan for some people, but it is not for all of us.
We do not have to wait for God to reveal some big, extraordinary plan for us in order to be in His Will. God has already laid out exactly what He wants us to do in our everyday, ordinary lives. All these years I have wondered what God’s Will was, but it’s actually really simple. The Bible lays it out for us.
Then What IS God’s Will?
God’s Will is for us to love Him, love people and share Jesus…
…where we live, work, and play
…in our homes, relationships, and everyday interactions
…in our business dealings, in our goings and comings, and in all that we do every single day.
Love God
God wants us to love Him more than anything else in our lives. More than our family, more than our money, more than our job, or anything else we may be tempted to idolize.
Matthew 23:37-38 NLT says, “Jesus replied, ‘You must love the Lord Your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.”
Spend Time With Him
When we love God, we need to spend time with Him, and we need to be in communication with Him. If we are ignoring God every day, then we cannot say that we truly love Him.
Study His Word
You cannot understand God’s Will if you are not in the word of God. When I say “in the Word of God,” I mean regularly reading and studying His Word, praying over it, and meditating on it. In order to align our thoughts with God’s thoughts, we have to read the divinely inspired words He has given to us.
Your word is a lamp for my feet, and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 NLT
In order to walk through the woods at night, we need some kind of light to show us the way and to keep us from falling down and getting hurt. Without reading God’s Word, we are walking through the darkness of life without a light. The Bible helps us to see our way and stay on the right path.
Pray
1 Chronicles 16:11 NIV says, “Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.”
How can we expect to know God’s Will for our lives if we are not in communication with Him? We have to talk to Him. And that’s exactly what prayer is…talking to God. The Bible says that we are to pray without ceasing, which means we are to be in a constant mindset of communication with God.
Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 NLT
Praise Him
Praise God because He is good, mighty, wonderful, and full of love and mercy. He is all-knowing, all-powerful, and unchanging. God is our creator, our counselor, Father, friend, protector, shield, healer, redeemer, savior, shepherd, fortress, and rock. He is SO good that every single good thing in our life comes from Him. There are so many reasons to praise God. So do it!
Love People
God wants us to love everybody, and that includes strangers, enemies, friends, and family. When we love someone, we not only treat them with kindness, but we also selflessly help them in their time of need. Furthermore, we offer forgiveness to them when they have hurt us and ask for their forgiveness when we have hurt them..
1 John 3:17 NLT says, “If anyone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need and refuses to help – how can God’s love be in that person?
Matthew 23:39 NLT says, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
We can show our love to others by modeling God’s love toward us. Therefore, in showing our love for others, we should…
- be truthful…
- …forgiving
- …kind
- …helpful
- …encouraging
- share our time and resources
- share our hope and joy
- reach out in their time of need
- pray for them
People do not naturally love like Christ loves. However, when a person believes on Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of him. The Holy Spirit enables us to love like Christ. Romans 5:5 NLT says, “For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”
Share Jesus
Tell People
God wants us to advance His Kingdom by telling everyone about Jesus. Therefore, we need to be unapologetically bold in sharing the Good News with people. Time is short, and people matter. We have to tell everyone we can that Jesus died for them.
God also gives us spiritual gifts that we are to use to spread the gospel to the world. See Romans 12:6-8
Mark 16:15 NLT says, “And then he [Jesus] told them, Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere.”
People need to know that there is hope in Jesus Christ and that this world is not all there is. There is an abundant place of victory in our future if we follow Jesus. Non-believers have no hope because this world certainly does not offer any. Share your story and share your joy with others.
Show People
We can tell people with our words, but we can also share Jesus in the way we live our lives. If we model our lives after Jesus, the world will see that something is different about us. They will see the joy and hope that comes from knowing Him.
In Closing
We do not have to wait for an unveiling of a mysterious plan in order to be in God’s Will. He tells us in His Word what He wants us to do right now, wherever we are in life, and whatever we are currently doing. He wants us to love Him, love others, and spread the Good News about Jesus.
